Algorithms: Homage to the Square
2016, Textile Art, 1st Prize
The inspiration behind this entry was Josef Albers’ ‘Homage to the Square’, primarily his colour combinations. From here, Devi married the visual identity of the couture runway; the black/white series was a nod to the classicism of Chanel and Dior, the pink series incorporated the 3D essence of Iris van Herpen and the softness found in Giambattista Valli, the green/yellow series, was an attempt to channel the individuality of Maison Margiela and Jean Paul Gaultier.
In total the final piece was make up of 188,128 Czech and Japanese beads and 96,878 French, Italian, and vintage sequins sourced worldwide. The ‘square’ has two representations, equality and democracy, and precision, therefore to be precise with the application each square had its own Excel spreadsheet.
